Hey! What are YOU watching this weekend? Welcome to the WKNDwatchlist! I’m Spling. The South African Film and Television Awards or SAFTAs have come and gone along with awards season, here are my top three from this year’s Best Picture line-up.
Old Righteous Blues
South Africa’s Oscar submission, Old Righteous Blues, is a soulful drama from Muneera Sallies, set in the vibrant world of Robertson’s Christmas marching bands. This Romeo and Juliet tale stars Ayden Croy as a young man caught between tradition and a forbidden romance. It’s an authentic, heart-stirring slice of culture that hits every right note.
Death of a Whistleblower
Ian Gabriel’s Death of a Whistleblower is a stylish, high-stakes dive into South Africa’s dark conspiracies. Noxolo Dlamini is magnetic as a journalist risking it all to expose a lethal cover-up. It’s a bit over-long at two hours, but this ‘fierce’ investigative thriller is a timely, gritty, and essential tribute to the fourth estate.
A Kind of Madness
Christiaan Olwagen’s A Kind of Madness is a vibrant ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ road trip led by legends Sandra Prinsloo and Ian Roberts. This soulful dramedy trades auteur flair for a heart-tugging look at aging, dementia, and rebellion. While the supporting cast pales beside the leads’ SAFTA-winning chemistry, it’s a beautifully wild, unmissable ride.
