WKNDwatchlist: Heart of the Beast, Resident Evil and Charlie Harper

This week, we venture from the bare-bones survival trek of an ex-soldier and his loyal hound in the Alaskan wild, to the creature-infested dread of an everyday courier in a zombie outbreak, and onto the emotionally tangled terrain of a tender romance drama in Rocky Roads.

David Ayer’s Heart of the Beast strands Brad Pitt and his combat dog in the brutal Alaskan wild after a plane crash. It looks great and Pitt delivers reliable grit, but a thin script and a two-dimensional lead keep the emotional stakes at arm’s length. It’s a watchable, bare-bones survival trek that leans on star power over genuine soul.

Stripping away decades of bloated lore, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot re-engineers the franchise into a taut, grounded survival horror. Anchored by Austin Abrams’ charmingly out-of-his-depth courier navigating a snowy outbreak, the film offsets dread with levity. With inventive set pieces, terrifying creature designs and sparse dialogue, this reboot is a punchy, atmospheric triumph.

Tender, grounded and unafraid to look beyond the honeymoon phase, Charlie Harper captures the messy push-and-pull of modern working-class love. While the script is muddled, fine co-lead chemistry keep the drama deeply engaging. It’s an authentic, bittersweet chronicle of two devoted people pulled apart by diverging ambitions – delivering intimate and honest romance drama.
