Superman Legacy Showdown on M-Net Movies

Superman is an altruistic force for good – a noble superhero who, despite his alien origins, inspires us to be better human beings by consistently putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He manages to save the day while maintaining a deep sense of humility, attempting to avoid the spotlight wherever possible.

While modern cinema has occasionally struggled to deliver a definitive Superman film adaptation, his counterparts – Wonder Woman and Shazam – have successfully navigated the challenges that often trip up the Man of Steel. They face off this weekend and all of January on
M-Net Movies 4 (channel 108)!

A Feminine Counterpoint

Wonder Woman was originally created as a counterpoint to the Superman archetype, offering a feminine alternative to the traditional heroics of Clark Kent with Diana Prince. It was a brilliant move that cultivated a legion of fans for a hero whose Lasso of Truth and immense powers forged a legacy in her own right. This iconic superhero was brilliantly brought to life by director Patty Jenkins (Monster) and statuesque lead Gal Gadot in the self-titled film.

The Spirit of Wish Fulfilment

Superman also inspired Shazam, who similarly maintains a dual identity and mirrors many of Superman’s noble qualities. Defined by a purity of spirit and selflessness, Shazam serves as a more comical version of the archetype. The film leans into pure wish fulfilment – much like the Tom Hanks classic, Big, as a young boy discovers what it means to inhabit the body of an adult superhero.

A Curious Showdown

This January matchup on M-Net Movies makes for a fascinating showdown between two essentially pure-hearted, all-powerful heroes. Their similarities to Superman are undeniable, yet they possess unique peculiarities. These distinguishing features allow them to shed any
“derivative” feel as they charge ahead in their own bold directions.

Wonder Woman

There is a distinct innocence to Diana, having grown up on a secluded island before being called to a world at war. This entertaining fantasy-actioner thrives on the interplay between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, while the epic action set pieces provide a sharp contrast between her idealism and the disillusionment of the real world. While the film experiences a slight “speed wobble” during its cataclysmic final boss showdown, Wonder Woman ultimately triumphs over evil to win our hearts.

Shazam!

This is a much more playful film that leans into its comic book roots, trading conventional superhero grit for an old-school feel. Casting Zachary Levi was a masterstroke… having charmed audiences in Chuck, he proves he has “Superman” qualities of his own. Levi perfectly taps into the vicarious dream of being a kid in a grown-up’s body. This light-hearted escapade is balanced by the superb villainy of Mark Strong as Dr Sivana, who provides a sinister and formidable nemesis for Shazam.

The Verdict

While both films offer full-tilt entertainment and supercharged spectacle, the synergy between Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is the engine room that sets Wonder Woman apart. It remains a vibrant, stirring and truly captivating adaptation that captures the very best of the superhero genre. Catch both iconic superheroes on M-Net Movies 4 (channel 108) this weekend and all January on DStv Stream!
