WKNDwatchlist – Showmax Gold: Toorbos, Meerkat Maantuig and Kanarie
Spling dives into a trio of homegrown masterpieces that have redefined the South African cinematic landscape. From the haunting whispers of the Knysna forest to a moon-bound ship and army conscript in the ’80s, we’re counting down Spling’s Top 3 local picks now streaming on Showmax.
Hey! What are YOU watching this weekend? Welcome to the WKNDwatchlist! I’m Spling. A champion of local content, Showmax is coming to an end after a good run. Before we lose access, catch three South African films that landed a spot in my Top 10.
Toorbos
Toorbos – or Dream Forest – is a 1930s South African masterpiece. It’s a wistful coming-of-age tale following Karoliena, a forest ‘wildling’ thrust into high society. Think My Fair Lady meets Atonement. With poetic visuals and a transfixing lead performance, it’s a quietly powerful study of identity and freedom… a total must-watch.
Meerkat Maantuig
Imagine a live-action Studio Ghibli film set in the South African countryside. Meerkat Maantuig is a whimsical, retro-styled fairy tale about a young girl trying to outrun a family curse. It’s Wes Anderson meets Bridge to Terabithia – visually lush, emotionally raw, and deeply magical. A soulful masterpiece that proves big stories don’t need big budgets.
Kanarie
1984 South Africa: where military grit meets Boy George. Kanarie is a vibrant coming-of-age musical following a conscript in the SADF choir. Think Full Metal Jacket crashing into Sing Street. It’s provocative, nostalgic and anchored by a stellar Schalk Bezuidenhout. A brave, ’80s-soaked masterpiece about finding your true notes in a discordant world.
