WKNDwatchlist – The Odyssey, Tenet and Interstellar
This week, we talk about three Christopher Nolan films, from an ancient mythical voyage and mind-bending time mechanics to the breathtaking cosmic journey of Interstellar in Endless Horizons.
The Odyssey is a monolithic cinematic event best witnessed on IMAX. Led by a solid yet safe Matt Damon, this epic blends jaw-dropping action set-pieces with a roaring Ludwig Göransson score. While the dialogue drags and the huge A-list cast can distract, the technical sheer brilliance makes it a must-watch. It’s not Nolan’s absolute best and is surprisingly bloodless, but it easily warrants your attention on the biggest screen possible – even at 3 hours.
Tenet is Nolan’s most bold and mind-bending puzzle yet. John David Washington leads an espionage epic where time literally runs backward, blending Bond-style action with Matrix-level concept work. The visuals are staggering, but cold character depth and confusing time-mechanics make it a fairly soulless ride. It’s an insanely ambitious technical spectacle, which will be most appreciated by hardcore Nolan diehards.
Interstellar is a messy masterpiece. Matthew McConaughey shines as a father lost in deep space, anchoring a stellar cast through mind-bending sci-fi and emotional turbulence. While an overstuffed script leaves supporting characters light on gravity, Hans Zimmer’s score and pristine visuals make this a stunning, immersive ride. Inconsistent? Yes. But it’s an ambitious, brilliant cinematic event.
