Guns, Grooms and Gore on M-Net Movies 1

Whether you’re drowning in roses or hiding from the heart-shaped balloon chaos, Valentine’s Day is an annual reminder of what we do – or don’t – have. If the cupid’s arrow sentiment feels a bit much this year, why not lean into the cynicism. From slapstick chaos and botched weddings to literal “heart-stopping” horror, here’s a look at what’s playing on M-Net Movies 1 (Channel 104) this February for those who prefer their romance with a side of mayhem.

The Naked Gun

A remake of the Leslie Nielsen classic, this reboot stars Liam Neeson as he steps into the big, goofy shoes of Lieutenant Frank Drebin. Doffing his hat to his predecessor, Neeson taps into the same spoof zone while proving himself just as versatile as the rubber-faced Nielsen. In this silly escapade, Drebin bands together with Beth Davenport (Pamela Anderson) to solve a murder and save the police department. While classic detective stories usually focus on “gumshoes” who go it alone, this modern take captures the DNA of the original, offering a double dose of nostalgia for audiences seeking something frivolous and light-hearted.

Heart Eyes

From the producers of Scream comes Heart Eyes, a high-energy mash-up of romantic comedy and slasher horror. The film centres on a serial killer whose modus operandi involves stalking and murdering couples on Valentine’s Day. The movie confidently strides through the well-worn tropes of both genres, capturing the best of both worlds. Featuring a masked killer reminiscent of Ghostface, this entertaining slasher carries an undercurrent of cheesiness that perfectly underscores the nature of V-Day while crafting genuinely suspenseful scares.

Bride Hard

Bride Hard is a spy comedy centred on an agent who must lean into her specialized skill set just as the wedding bells start to chime. It stars Rebel Wilson in an uncharacteristic role as an undercover action hero and terrible bridesmaid. Wilson delivers her trademark quirk while ratcheting up the stakes with a gung-ho performance. Much like Spy and Shotgun Wedding, there is great fun to be had in watching a comic powerhouse navigate full-tilt action. As mercenaries descend on the big day, the film concocts a series of ridiculous sequences where “keeping up appearances” quickly turns into “saving lives.”

Companion

For those seeking something darker, Companion is an elegant, unsettling psychological sci-fi thriller about a weekend getaway where one guest is not who they seem. Swathed in artful drama and dark comedic notes, the tension escalates as a would-be companion transforms into a cold-blooded killer. Led by a strong performance from Sophie Thatcher as Iris, this tale is a whirlwind of comedy, horror and romance. By offsetting the notion of love against profound loneliness – and touching on timely themes of AI and alienation – Companion makes for a visceral and wild Anti-Valentine’s ride.

Juliet and Romeo

This film does for the Bard’s tale what Across the Universe did for the Beatles. Taking a page from A Knight’s Tale, it introduces contemporary music into a medieval setting, crafting a modern story to the tune of global pop hits. While this version of Verona is far from the one you studied in school, its handsome cast and vibrant pageantry add a fresh spin to the doomed romance. The rivalry between the houses of Montague and Capulet takes centre stage once again, proved timeless by a high-energy, modern soundtrack.
